A STUDY IN 2 TIMOTHY 2

Hey! So a quick backstory, I came across this during my devotional time and it was so great. To be completely honest, I have been struggling while in this quarantine with faithfully reading my bible. To read this was so exciting because of the many things God was teaching me through it and I knew I wanted to share. Grab your bibles and go to 2 Timothy 2, starting in verse 14.

14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.

This verse reminds us that our minds are so small. Often times we read/learn new things and then shortly forget about them. Have you ever been talking with your friend and they ask you about something from a while ago that you do not remember? In the same way, it is saying God’s people need to be reminded. We forget things and it is important to have someone help us, from time to time. The second part of that, the main point of this passage, is to watch our words. It’s not only of NO value to fight with our words, but it can hurt those who we are speaking to.

16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.

In my mind 'Godless chatter’ can be gossip, speaking about worthless things, or venting about a situation. He calls us to AVOID those things because it can end up hurting you. I love this because sometimes I feel like I am quick to speak when things happen and it ends up making the situation worse. I notice that when I think about the wise people in my life, they are all slow to speak. This is such an important reminder to those of us who are in high school. There are many people who will say things or try to hurt you with words to see your reaction. As Christians, it is an opportunity to show the love of Jesus to them through how we respond to ungodly chatter and speech. Such great truth in just a few simple verses!

19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

Verse nineteen was full of truths and what the reality of being a TRUE follower of Jesus looks like. I challenge you to write down this verse!

21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. 22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Verses 21-22: Those who call on Jesus in a relationship with Him will be used, as it says, for special purposes!! That great promise comes with a price -> to pursue holiness, love, faith, purity, over our own desires. I am definitely willing to chose that any day, but not going to lie, it is difficult sometimes. Your walk with Christ is not going to always be easy, it comes with hard challenges, but the reward is so much greater and that is why we do what we do! A relationship with Jesus is better than anything else. This means, choosing Him when people around you are not....deciding not to drink or party because it does not glorify Him....choosing not to go to certain places because you know what is going on there will not put you in the best situations...not wearing things that the world says is “cute” because they do not reflect a heart of modesty... and waking up early instead of sleeping in to spend time reading a daily devotion. That’s what it means to choose God and not the ungodly things it refers to in verses 21 and 22.

23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. We are reminded again to not have anything involved in worthless chatter and foolish arguments. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

The final verse 23-26, are so powerful! We as Christians have repented and have followed in the learning of the knowledge of the truth. I thought it was written very well!

TAKEAWAY---

~ As Christians we are to choose Christ each day; choosing to deny the desires of the world and RATHER pursue love, faith, purity, and holiness. Every day, striving to watch how we speak and deciding what we speak about. Questioning... if our speech is full of godly and valued chatter?
